About Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy:
Making Archaeology Matter
Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy is a shared vision for the future of archaeology in Scotland. It brings together organisations, professionals, volunteers, community groups and individuals who believe that archaeology has an important role to play in understanding our past, enriching our present and shaping our future.
Launched in 2015, the Strategy provides a national framework for working together to ensure that archaeology is valued, protected and accessible to everyone. Rather than belonging to a single organisation, it is a collaborative strategy that encourages partnership, innovation and shared responsibility across Scotland’s archaeological sector.
Our vision
Our vision is for a Scotland where archaeology matters to everyone.
Archaeology helps us to understand the people, places and landscapes that have shaped Scotland over thousands of years. It supports education, informs planning and conservation, contributes to research, strengthens local identity and connects communities with their heritage. The Strategy recognises that these benefits are greatest when archaeology is inclusive, collaborative and open to all.
The Strategy
The Strategy is organised around five strategic aims, which provide a shared direction for the sector and guide projects, partnerships and activities across Scotland. Together, these aims support a sustainable and ambitious future for archaeology.
Whether you are a heritage professional, volunteer, land manager, researcher, student, policymaker or simply interested in Scotland’s past, the Strategy provides opportunities to get involved and contribute.
Delivering the Strategy
Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy is delivered through collaboration. A wide range of organisations and individuals contribute to its success by developing projects, sharing expertise, supporting communities and championing archaeology across Scotland.
The Scottish Strategic Archaeology Committee oversees the delivery of the Strategy, monitors progress and helps ensure that it continues to respond to new opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
